Tissue Salts Explained

Updated: Jun 16

History of Tissue Salts

The major pioneers for Tissue Salts were Dr. Hahnemann, Constantine Hering, as well as a few others but, it was Dr. Schuessler who developed the complete system of these salts into what we know today as the 12 Schuessler Tissue Salts or Cell Salts.

In the late 19th century, Dr. Schuessler was a practicing Physician but also a Physicist and a Physiological Chemist. He developed these Tissue Salts using a unique system of cellular therapy and biochemistry. Through his studies he found that there are 12 inorganic minerals in our bodies in which he named "Tissue Salts". In 1873 he developed the theory of biochemical medicine by combining the principles of biochemistry with homeopathy to give us the 12 safe and natural cell salts. Each if these salts are derived from the 12 inorganic mineral compounds which are very important for the cellular health!

Tissue salts stimulate the bodies natural abilities to repair the mineral imbalances within on a cellular level. He realized that it was the deficiencies in the minerals that cause common health problems and that the cell salts are derived from these minerals are those that give the body what is required to treat the illnesses.

The plants that bear food for us are grown in mineral rich soils that absorb these vital inorganic mineral tissue salts. What once was grown in the gardens outside, free of pesticides and too much human intervention, is now growing in a lab or indoors thus removing all natural light, soil and nutrients. As a society we are depleted of these common minerals. What happens when we are depleted of necessary minerals? Out bodies begin to call out through symptoms in which we have to address.

Can I Not Just Take a Supplement For That?

When people hear that they are low in a specific mineral, they turn to supplementation (raw substance) which often results in toxic results because the molecules are too large for the body's cells to absorb properly. For instance, taking large amounts of raw calcium phosphate can cause physiological problems such as kidney stones or impaired absorption of other essential minerals. However, in its tissue salt form, Calc Phos does not cause these issues but rather create a equilibrium for the already existing or need for absorption and retention of this mineral.

Dr. Schuessler noted that in nature, minerals in plants are found in a finely diluted form. For example, when you consume dairy products or leafy greens, you don't ingest chunks of calcium phosphate; instead, it's present in a finely distributed form that the body can easily absorb. Dr. Schuessler applied homeopathic trituration methods to prepare the tissue salts, reducing the mineral to a very fine, easily assimilable form. Tissue salts like Calc Phos are therefore minerals in an energy form, combined with a lactose base. When these salts dissolve in the mouth, they are quickly released into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes, making them available to the body's cells and tissues almost immediately. This process bypasses the digestive system, ensuring efficient and safe absorption of the necessary minerals without the risk of toxicity associated with the raw, undiluted forms.

I am not against supplementation. In fact, I believe that supplements can play an important role in maintaining and improving health, especially when there are specific nutritional deficiencies or increased needs that cannot be met through diet alone. My intention is to highlight the differences between tissue salts and other forms of supplements, and to provide information on how they are uniquely prepared and utilized by the body. It is important to consult with a professional Naturopath to determine the best approach to supplementation for your individual health needs.

Are Tissue Salts Homeopathic Remedies?

Though we are treating the mineral imbalance with the inorganic mineral itself, it is not at all a homeopathic remedy and here's why:

Homeopathic remedies operate on the practice of Law of Similars (like-cures-like), which is that a substance causing symptoms in a healthy person can, when highly diluted, treat similar symptoms in a sick person. The chosen substance is repeatedly diluted and succussed (shaken vigorously). A common method involves diluting the substance in a water-alcohol solution, usually in a ratio of 1:100 (C potency) or 1:50,000 (LM potency). This process is repeated multiple times. For instance, a 30C remedy has been diluted 1:100 thirty times.

Tissue salts work on the Law of Deficiency, addressing imbalances or deficiencies in essential minerals within the body's cells. Unlike homeopathic remedies, tissue salts are typically prepared at a lower dilution level, commonly D6, which means one part of the mineral salt is diluted with one million parts lactose base.

The D6 designation indicates a specific dilution level of one part tissue salt to a million parts lactose base. This distinguishes tissue salts from homeopathic preparations, which are usually much more diluted. Tissue salts follow a biochemic approach, meaning they function based on the principle of addressing deficiencies in the body. Rather than taking the word "deficiencies" literally, it is rather a lack of continuity in the arrangement of the existing molecules in the body.

Tissue salts do not supply a lack or deficiency of Natr. mur (salt) as the quantity is is usually too infinitesimal (extremely small) and if this were the case it might be given in quantity of food with desired effect. Essentially, if the deficit is a molecular one, the supply must also be molecular to initiate proper function.

When used together, they make great team within the system as the homeopathic remedy is acting directly on the bodies vital force, encouraging it's own strength to heal within and the tissue salts are aiding the process like the guardian of the vital force and internal workings. It is going deep and direct to the deficiencies and providing it exactly what it needs to regain its nutrients and equilibrium again.

12 Tissue Salts

Calcium Fluoride

Calc-fluor is found in the surface of the bones and in the enamel of the teeth. It is also a constituent of the elastic fibres and epidermis. Elastic Fibres are found in the skin, connective tissues and vascular walls. A disturbance of equilibrium of this salt causes:

  • Loss of elasticity of fibres, which results in disturbance of function and physiology of the blood vessels (enlarged veins, vascular tumours, indurated glands, postpartum haemorrhage, uterine displacement and weakening of abdominal walls.)

  • Exostosis (extra growth of bone)

  • It is a useful salt during pregnancy in that it helps to reduce the formation of stretch marks and to maintain and restore the elasticity of the breasts and vaginal tissues after birth

Calcium Phosphate

Found in blood-plasma, saliva, gastric juice, bones, connective tissue, teeth, milk, etc… It provides solidity to bones, supplies new blood cells (a great remedy for anemia), important for coagulation of blood when it is necessary, and is required to be present wherever there is albuminous substances found in secretions. A disturbance of equilibrium of this salt causes:

  • Provides solidity to bones

  • Promotes cell growth

  • For curvatures in bones, Rickets, Osteoarthritis, non union of fractured bones

  • Delayed teeth formation in children, even after losing the milk teeth, the growth of subsequent teeth are delayed, growing pains

  • Best taken as an intercurrent remedy as it promotes cell growth by stimulating the bodies system

Calcium Sulphate

Calc-sulph is a blood purifier and healer. It cleans out the accumulation of non-functional organic matter in the tissue. It is present in the bile which comes from the liver. It removes the excess water from the worn out red blood cells. Therefore it is important to have sufficient amount of this salt in the body so the worn out blood cells and be disposed in a timely manner. A disturbance of equilibrium of this salt causes:

  • Conditions associated with discharges such as pimples, boils, abscesses, and ulcerations

  • Glands are indurated (hardened)

  • Acts upon connective tissue

  • The presence of pus with a vent is a general indication

Ferrum Phosphate

Iron is found in the Haemoglobin of the red blood cells. Iron and its salts attract oxygen and the iron of red blood cells takes up the oxygen from inspired air, and carry it to every cell throughout the organism. A disturbance of equilibrium of the iron causes:

  • Loosening of the muscular fibres causing relaxation

  • If this loosening happens in the walls of blood vessels, it causes dilation and accumulation of blood in blood vessels, congestion, high blood pressure, rupture of the walls and hemorrhage

  • If the muscular walls of the intestinal villi are loosened the result will be diarrhea or the peristaltic action of the bowels is weakened and the result is constipation

  • Any disturbance in the muscular walls, injuries and trauma can benefit from Ferr-phos

Kalium Muriaticum

This salt is found in the blood, muscles, nerve and brain cells as well as the inter-cellular fluids. Corresponds to the second stage of inflammation of serous membranes and is useful is disease (diphtheria, dysentery, croup, croupous pneumonia, lymphatic enlargements)

  • The principal general characteristic symptoms are: white or grey coating at the base of the tongue, white or grey thick phlegmy discharges from any mucous surface, glandular swelling, flour-like scaling of the skin and lethargy of liver

  • Useful in all types of convulsions, epileptic and others

  • General preventative medicine for any infections and fevers

  • Allergies and intolerances after long use of medicines

Kalium Phosphate

Kali-phos is a constituent of all animal fluids and tissues, mainly of the brain, nerves, muscles and blood cells. This salt provides an alkaline environment. The alkaline reaction is essential to a large number of vital processes in the tissues. The disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Pulse at first small and frequent, later retardation

  • Pain with paralytic sensation

  • Muscular and nerve prostration and later paralysis

  • Sluggish conditions of the mind due to disturbance of this salt molecules

Kalium Sulphate

Found in the cells and intercellular fluids, muscles, nerves, epithelium and blood. It is the carrier of oxygen and oxygen is taken up by the iron contained in the blood which is carried to every cell. It helps functions of epidermis and epithelium. The disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Ailments are accompanied by profuse desquamation of epidermis and yellow mucus discharges

  • Moist eruptions on the head, eczema, measly type of eruptions

  • To maintain skin, hair and mucus membranes

Magnesium Phosphate

It is an earthy constituent of muscles, nerves, bones, brain (grey substance more), spine, sperm, teeth and blood. A disturbance of its molecular motion causes cramps, pains and paralysis. Pains which are darting, spasmodic, boring, lightening like, accompanied by constrictive feeling and changing location. The disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Diseases which are in the nerve fibre cells or endings of the nerves, in the muscles or muscular tissue itself

  • It especially helps in cramping pains, not burning pains

  • Muscle cramps, hunger pains, flatulence, nervous tension

  • Spasmodic pains, menstrual pains, hiccups, and tension headaches

Natrum Muriaticum

The most important of the chemical substances in the blood plasma. Salt attracts water so it is also an important mineral to take the toxins out of the cells by absorbing water from the fluids around the cell and sending them to the kidney for being expelled. If there are not enough Sodium Chloride within cells, the water that is supposed to keep them moist is retained in the intercellular fluids and the person with deficiency shows a watery, bloated appearance with craving for salt. However, no matter how much salt the person takes with the food, but because cells can’t take up the particles of salt, the diseased condition is not removed. The disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Excessive moisture or dryness

  • Prone to cold sores

  • It acts upon the blood, lymphatic system, the mucous lining of the digestive tract

  • Sunstroke prevention

  • All types of edema

Natrum Phosphate

Helps the decomposition of lactic acid into carbonic acid and water. A disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Remedy for conditions arising from excess of lactic acid

  • Jaundice, hepatic colic, bilious headaches and imperfect assimilation of fats due to lack of bile

  • Gastric and intestinal disorders with sour and acid symptoms, worms, acidity and diarrhea

  • Water retention, overindulgence of alcohol, hepatitis, malaria, and cholera

Natrum Sulphate

This salt aids and regulates the excretion of excess water, therefore the disturbance of the molecular motion will result in prevention of elimination of water and therefore causes edema. It excites the secretion of intestines and stimulates the activity of intestinal glands, liver and pancreas. It is a liver conditioner and a disturbance of this salt can result in the followings:

  • Keeps the bile in normal consistency

  • It eliminates excess of water from blood

  • It is a valuable remedy for gastric bilious conditions, accumulation of water in the tissues which hold organs in place (areolar tissues), yellow watery secretion on the skin, excessive secretion of bile, liver affections, sand in urine, diabetes, gout, etc...

Silicea

Traces of Silicea is found in blood, bile or urine. It is also found in connective tissue, especially embryonic, and hence its effect on the spinal cord, brain and nerves. Silicea acts upon the organic substances of the body such as bones, joints, glands, skin and mucous surfaces.

  • Wherever there is pus formed in an inflamed part of connective tissue, Silicea can be used

  • It is a remedy for ailments attended with pus-formation and it is closely related to fistulous borrowings

  • Ripens abscess since it promotes suppuration. (Calc-sulph restrains the suppurative process and heals the suppurating wounds)

  • Chronic suppurations and ulcerations, carbuncles, tonsillitis, glandular swellings, indurations, foot sweats, uterine disorders
